Pier 400, Berth 408 Project
Community Education Forums

In 2006, we conducted a series of Community Education Forums held at convenient locations in Wilmington and San Pedro. We designed the format of the Education Forums to allow the community to meet with our engineers and experts, ask questions and explore the many aspects of the Pier 400, Berth 408 Project.

Our Community Education Forum outreach planning included contacting the area Neighborhood Councils and community groups via local advertising in area newspapers. We also extended Forum invitations by attending numerous community meetings and we mailed out over 91, 000 postcards alerting the public about the Forum dates and times.

The Community Education Forums were moderated by Jim Fawcett, Marine Transportation/Seaport Specialist from the USC Sea Grant Program www.usc.edu/org/seagrant. \r\n In their traditional role, Sea Grant helped to explain and explore relevant analytical processes, while bringing good science and public policy perspectives into context for the community. Sea Grant facilitated these meetings, without compensation from Pacific L. A. Marine Terminal LLC Partners, as part of their ongoing efforts to enhance marine science and policy education.

The Community Forum workshops featured technical briefings by members of the Pier 400, Berth 408 Project Team, reviewing the following topics: Marine Transportation and Terminal Operations; Facilities and Coastal Engineering: Environmental Issues; Community Concerns; Security and Emergency Response, as well as Economic Factors.

We have incorporated the information discussed during the Forums into this web site and welcome your questions and comments. Please use the “feedback” form to keep in touch and let us know what you think of the process.
